Welcome to Second Grade

I would like to first introduce myself. My name is Monica Hill. I love teaching and second grade is definitely where I should be. My enthusiasm for teaching matches their enthusiasm for learning and makes for a wonderful classroom setting. In our classroom we work together to make it a successful year.  I believe that it takes the collaborative work from everyone to help teach a child.  

​I appreciate all communication with parents/guardians to help make our students day go smoother and help them be more successful in the classroom. I have an open classroom policy. I value how many parents volunteer each and are involved in Room 2. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know!

Any notes, calls, emails, and meeting with me before and after school are greatly appreciated!

Major Goals

* I love to establish a strong classroom community.

* I want for students to feel respected and to be respectful.
* I work through the year to slowly develop independence.
* I would like students to leave second grade full of knowledge
           and excitement to learn. 
* I would like students to be able to collaborate using math
          reasoning to solve problems.

Classroom Events

The second graders get to look forward to a few major events during our year.
After our Earth's events science unit we create salt dough volcanoes and land forms.
We try to do 2 or more reader's theater during the year.
We celebrate our writers be writing and publishing a class book.
Each year is different and special, and additional events may vary.

Classroom homework

We are going to have a great school year!
Each week homework is sent home on Monday. Students have Monday through Thursday homework. The homework consists of one piece  that matches what we are studying in class and a minimum of 20 minutes of reading each night. Even 20 minutes a night can change a reader. The ability to read fluently affects all other academic areas.  Homework is due back on Friday.
