Morning Assembly / Whole School Run: Each morning our school gathers to do the flag salute and sing a patriotic song. On Thursdays we get our day started with a whole school run. It’s always a great way to start our morning!
Language Arts: During Language Arts our class studies fiction and non-fiction selections. We also work on weekly spelling and grammar activities. Students also meet for language arts centers with Mrs. Dey. We also focus on writing narrative, expository, and opinion writing during this time.
Math: In addition to daily math lessons, activities and investigations, students have the opportunity to learn through math centers along with the help from Mrs. . Math is a very interactive time where students are challenged to make connections to their lives and find hands-on solutions.
AR (Accelerated Reader): During this time students have opportunities to read self-selected books at their own level. Their reading comprehension is measured through a computer program called Accelerated Reader (AR). In AR students set goals to achieve each trimester.
Social Studies: In third grade students explore local history. They study Butte County landforms, Native Americans, historical figures and landmarks.
Science: Students will begin the year learning about equal and unequal forces and magnets . They also will be learning about weather in various regions and weather-related hazards. Finally, they finish the year learning about plant and animal traits and how each adapt to changes in the environment.
Second Step: Since building good character is important to us at NCS, each week we focus on developing our social skills. This year we will be focusing on skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving.
Garden: Third grade students have the privilege of helping out in our garden with Mark and Ernie on the first Tuesday, and last Thursday of the month. We love Mark and Ernie, and we love our garden!
Buddies: Our class meets with Miss A and Mrs. Ruley's class every-other week. We do activities that foster community on campus and that are related to what we’re learning in science and social studies.
Art: Every-other week Mrs. Kerr teaches us art. It is always so fun to learn about new artists and new ways to be creative!
Music: Third graders participate in music lessons with Mrs. Baugher. Every-other week she teaches us fabulous music lessons.
Spanish: On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons we learn Spanish with Maestra Chang. ¡Qué divertido!
Class Jobs: Each week third graders get to contribute to classroom by doing a “Class Job”. Our class of students does a great job making sure our classroom is well cared for.
Friday Funday: Every Friday students who complete their homework and class assignments on time are rewarded with time to play educational games and be creative.
